This is an original 1881 chromolithograph of the American Lanier or Prairie Falcon, Lanier Falcon, Prairie Hawk (fig. 1); the American Barn Owl, Barn Owl (fig. 2); the Pigmy Owl (fig. 3); Ferrugineous Owl or Red-tailed Owl (fig. 4); the Burrowing Owl (fig. 5); Harris Finch or Sparrow, Black-hooded Sparrow (fig. 6); and the Oregon Snow-bird (fig. 7).

Period Paper is pleased to offer an exceptional collection of oversized chromolithographs featuring the birds of North America. This collection is the work of Jacob Henry Studer, ornithologist. More than 700 different species of birds are "artistically drawn and colored from Nature" by artist Theodore Jasper. These chromolithographs are in superb condition with excellent color saturation and detail, and would look stunning framed. (Please note that there is no printing on the reverse.)

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Jacob Henry Studer (1840-1904) was a printer, lithographer, and ornithologist. He is best known as the editor and publisher of Studers Popular Ornithology: The Birds of North America, a popular 19th century lay-persons guide to the bird species of North America. More affordable than the work of John James Audubon, this book went through several editions from 1874-1904. In this edition (1881) is a tender dedication to his wife, Caroline Buss Studer "the builder of my hopes" who died 2 September 1871 and to his daughters, Mary Francisca and Anna Regina who both died in April of 1876. A copy of this dedication is included with each order (please see both images).
